Cecilia Gustafsson and Linus Johansson are the two creators behind the SOMA concept. It all began in 2012 when they met on a training retreat where both were engaged as leaders and trainers. Their shared passion for movement, well-being, and innovative training methods sparked an instant connection. After their first meeting, a highly creative collaboration took form, leading to the birth of the unique movement system known today as SOMA MOVE.
SOMA MOVE quickly gained recognition for its ability to seamlessly blend strength and fluidity. Unlike traditional fitness methods that isolate movements or focus solely on power, SOMA MOVE introduced an entirely new way of training—one that embraces the body’s natural motion patterns. The method emphasizes a continuous, flowing transition between movements, combining athletic dynamism with graceful control. This created a workout that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing, engaging participants on a deeper physical and mental level.
SOMA MOVE became the perfect choice for those who train intensively and need to complement their regimen with mobility and flexibility without sacrificing intensity. At the same time, it appealed to individuals who sought power and explosiveness while maintaining an effortless sense of fluidity. The training style proved highly adaptable, making it accessible to both seasoned athletes and beginners alike, SOMA MOVE offered something unique to every practitioner.
As the years passed, SOMA MOVE continued to evolve, adapting to the needs of different training styles and populations. This led to the creation of additional branches within the concept, each focusing on a specific aspect of movement and well-being. SOMA MIND and SOMA SLOW emerged to highlight the importance of stillness, mindfulness, and controlled, slow movements. These formats provided a calming counterbalance to the dynamic intensity of SOMA MOVE, helping practitioners develop deeper body awareness and relaxation techniques. Meanwhile, SOMA STRENGTH was introduced to further explore the potential of controlled power and stability, refining the strength elements of the practice while keeping its holistic foundation intact.
Through its four distinct components, SOMA has grown into a comprehensive movement system that bridges the gap between fitness, therapy, and performance training. The method is not just about exercise; it is a way to enhance the body’s natural ability to move efficiently, prevent injuries, and create sustainable strength. With a strong emphasis on scientific research and biomechanical understanding, SOMA provides trainers, instructors, teachers, coaches, and body therapists with a well-rounded framework to guide their clients towards improved movement quality and overall well-being.
Today, SOMA is represented in over 200 training facilities and clubs, reaching thousands of participants worldwide. The method has gained international recognition, but it proudly remains rooted in its Swedish origins. The Scandinavian approach to training—characterized by quality, innovation, and a deep connection to nature—is at the heart of SOMA’s philosophy. As the concept continues to grow and expand across different countries and cultures, it stays true to its mission: to provide an accessible, holistic, and research-based movement experience that empowers individuals to move better, feel stronger, and live healthier.
